More than three years ago, Google acquired Waze, a GPS-based navigation system that helps drivers navigate the roads and keep up with traffic.
Google bought Waze from the city of Phoenix, Ariz., in August for $1.3 billion, and it’s now available for more than 30 cities in the U.S. Waze is also the subject of an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission over its advertising practices.
Wokeu, the Google subsidiary that developed Waze in Phoenix, has since gone public.
In the past few months, Waze has gone from a Google subsidiary to being an independent company, with Waze’s chief executive Officer, Matt Osterloh, stepping down and his wife, Heather, taking over as CEO.
Google, which acquired Wike for $700 million in 2015, is not disclosing the price.
But a review of Waze advertising data by the New York Times shows that the app has gone public in the past three months.
Wike, which is now available in cities including Boston, Austin, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Portland, Ore., was featured prominently on Google Maps in February, according to the Times.
A Google spokesperson said Waze had not been featured in the Google Maps navigation system since February.
The Times also published a list of cities that had used Waze to display its advertising.
Wazed has about 4.4 million active users in the United States, according the Times, though that number has fluctuated in recent months, according a Google spokesperson.
The company did not respond to a request for comment.
The Times analyzed advertising data from Google Maps for Boston and Washington, the Washington Post reported.
The data showed that Waze ads were appearing in places like Boston and Portland.
Wookies also appeared in Washington, but not in Portland, according Google Maps.
“There is no doubt that the Waze community is excited about this announcement,” Heather Osterleoh, Google’s chief operating officer, wrote in a blog post.
“We are thrilled to have them back at the forefront of this industry.
We will continue to work with them and their teams to build the best Waze experience possible for our users.”
